LADIES CELEBRATION

Ladies Sangeet Singers & Performers

Female singers leading the whole evening — the Sangeet or dholki night, with traditional boliyan and live dholki.

We provide female Punjabi performers who lead your Ladies Sangeet from start to finish — traditional boliyan and folk songs through to Bollywood and modern fusion, with live dholki throughout — for Punjabi and Pakistani weddings across the UK and internationally.

What a Ladies Sangeet evening looks like

A Sangeet is not a background-music event. It is a participation event. The performers have to know when to hold a song back, when to pull the bride’s side and the groom’s side into the teasing boliyan, and when to let the dholki carry the room into dancing.

That is the part experience buys you. Reena Kaur has been performing at Sangeet nights for over twenty-five years, and the evening is led rather than simply played. Songs are sequenced so the energy builds, families are drawn in by name where you want them to be, and the traditional call-and-response sections actually get a response.

Our guide: What Is a Ladies Sangeet? →

What your booking includes

  • Live dholki accompaniment, which is what separates a Sangeet from a playlist.
  • A set list built with you in advance, drawing on traditional Punjabi folk, boliyan, Pakistani classics, Bollywood and modern fusion.
  • Professional sound equipment, brought and set up by us.
  • Coordination with your venue and anyone else on the running order, so the Sangeet slots into the evening cleanly.

The dholki, and the singers who lead the evening

The dholki is the small two-headed hand drum a Sangeet is built on, and in many families it gives the whole night its name. Live dholki is part of the booking rather than an extra, because a Sangeet accompanied by a recording is a different event — the drum has to follow the room, speed up when the dancing starts and drop back under a verse.

The Sangeet singers who lead the evening are female Punjabi performers, and most of what they do is not singing at all: it is reading the room, pulling families into the boliyan by name, and knowing when a song has run its course.

Sound equipment and live performance

Professional sound equipment is included and we bring and set it up ourselves. A Sangeet is a live performance in a room full of people talking, and getting a single vocal to carry over that without deafening the front table is the whole job of the PA.

Most function rooms and homes need nothing beyond a standard power supply. If your venue has its own system, a noise limiter, or restrictions on when we can set up, tell us early and we will deal with the venue directly rather than discovering it on the night.

Building the set list with you

Custom song selections are standard, not an upgrade. Most families have a handful of songs that matter — a mother’s song, a grandmother’s song, the one that always gets played — and those go into the running order deliberately rather than by chance.

If there are songs you specifically do not want, tell us those too. It is a short conversation and it is the difference between a set that fits your family and a generic one.

Who books a Ladies Sangeet

Most bookings are the bride’s family, for the Sangeet or dholki night in the run-up to the wedding — see Punjabi wedding entertainment for how the Sangeet fits with the rest of the week. We also perform at Mehndi nights, Jago celebrations, engagement parties, milestone birthdays and women’s community events where the same format works.

The scale varies enormously — from a front room with close family to a full function suite — and the line-up is matched to it.

Frequently asked questions

What is a Ladies Sangeet?

A Ladies Sangeet is the women’s celebration held in the days before a Punjabi or Pakistani wedding. It centres on singing, dholki playing and dancing, and it is one of the most participatory events in the wedding week.

Are all your Ladies Sangeet performers female?

The Sangeet singers who lead the evening are female. Accompanying musicians, including dholki players, are not always. If the evening needs to be women only throughout, tell us when you enquire and we will confirm what we can arrange for your date.

Can we choose our own songs?

Yes, and we would encourage it. The set list is built with you in advance from traditional Punjabi folk, boliyan, Pakistani classics, Bollywood and modern fusion. Specific family songs can be written into the running order, and songs you would rather avoid can be left out. Custom song selections are standard rather than an upgrade.

Do you provide dholki players?

Yes. Live dholki accompaniment is part of a Ladies Sangeet booking, and it is the thing that separates a Sangeet from a playlist. The dholki is the small two-headed hand drum the singing is built on, and the player works with the singers rather than simply keeping time.

Can you perform at a Mehndi or dholki night?

Yes to a dholki night. In most families the dholki night and the Sangeet are the same evening under two names, so this is exactly the service that covers it. At a Mehndi we do not perform while the henna is being applied, because it takes the energy away from the performance; tell us the running order and we will plan the set around it. We also perform at Jago celebrations, engagement parties and women’s community events.

How much does a Ladies Sangeet singer cost?

The quote depends on the number of performers, how long you need them for, the date, the venue and where it is, whether live dholki and full sound are part of the booking, and the travel involved. Send us the details of your evening and we will quote against what it actually needs.

Can you perform internationally?

Yes. We take international bookings and have performed overseas. Tell us the country, the venue and the date when you enquire, and travel and logistics are built into the quote.

Ready to talk about your event?

Tell us the date, the venue and what you have in mind, and we will put together a bespoke quote.
